This enormous rhododendron is the largest of over 120 different varieties in this garden.
We don’t know the variety of this rhododendron but it is by far the largest in the garden and it flowers very reliably too. Sometimes it is absolutely covered in pink flowers so that it is hard to see any of its leaves. We’ve seen it from the air, having taken off in a plane from Aberdeen airport, it is so massively pink!
After flowering the petals fall so thickly that the ground is entirely covered – see photo below.
Many of the species of rhododendron come from the Hymalayas – The mountain range that lies to the north of the Indian sub-continent.
The earliest rhododendron here sometimes flowers before Christmas and the latest in August – so for well over half the year at least one of them is in flower.

Some kind words from our previous guests…
“Sincere thanks for all your hospitality, and for those thoughtful touches; a quilt for a sleepy six-year-old; a little chat with someone sitting alone; deep local knowledge that helps tease out a memory from another.”
